Amathus: Ohnefalsch-Richter's excavation of four tombs
1885 · Amathus
Max Ohnefalsch-Richter's 1885 work at Amathus: four undisturbed tombs, an early altar with votive terracottas and a small sanctuary northeast of the town.
The project
In 1885 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter opened four undisturbed tombs at Amathus, described as Graeco-Phoenician, and Hermary states that he excavated them at his own expense.1,2 In the necropolis he also found an early altar with votive terracottas.1
He explored a small sanctuary northeast of the town, which the catalogue lists as not yet excavated, and brought statuettes and terracottas to light there; Hermary notes that it was dedicated to several divinities.1,2 Hermary characterizes the activity as limited and cautions that the limestone statuettes discussed in his own article should not be assigned to the tombs of 1885.2 The only object from these excavations that Ohnefalsch-Richter explicitly described and illustrated, in Hermary's account, is a terracotta model of a shrine, which the catalogue associates with the sanctuary and which is in the Philadelphia Museum.1,2
