Description:

Terracotta female figure holding an infant; Base Ring II ware; hand-made; hollow construction; thin poorly preserved burnished buff slip; originally two triple pierced ears with hanging circular ear-rings, only one ear with lower ear-ring on the right side preserved; beak-shaped nose, applied pellets for eyes and incised strokes for eyebrows; elongated neck widening to broad, flattened oval hips and tapering to small overlapping feet; arms sticking out at angle to body and hands clasped together at chest; the stylised infant is held vertical in the crook of the left arm, facing outwards; incised detail of bands at neck, diagonal cross over pinched breasts, strokes and chevrons on pubic triangle, incisions for the fingers and toes; hole pierced for navel; small bumps representing knees; legs shaped by vertically shaving excess clay; fabric orange to pink with grey core; mended from pieces and partially reconstructed.
