The Cyprus leaves of the album

4 photographs · 1875–85

Sites: Limassol, Kyrenia

These are the Cyprus prints from pages 40 and 41 of an album of travel photographs of about 1880 at the Wellcome Collection (575411i), whose other pages show America, Canada and elsewhere. The album names neither its compiler nor its photographers. Its captions identify a two-part panorama of Limassol, the ruins of the palace at Famagusta, the harbour of Kyrenia and the waterfront at Scala near Larnaca. The prints are general views from high ground or along the shore: roofs running down to the sea, boats at anchor, houses with balconies, and the broken walls and tall pointed window of the palace among rubble and palm trees. The first section of the Limassol panorama has not been digitised and is not shown.

The same towns appear in John Thomson's photographs of 1878, which can be set beside these views.
