Limestone Cypro-Greek I Mersinaki I-II

Limestone head with a leafy band in its hair, from Mersinaki, shown in three-quarter view — Photograph: Swedish Cyprus Expedition, 1927–31. Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Csn0467. Public domain (CC0).

Description

A carved limestone head with a pitted, weathered surface, turned slightly to the right in three-quarter view. The short wavy hair is bound by a band of leaves across the top of the head, and the almond-shaped eyes, small mouth and full chin are clearly modelled. The neck ends abruptly at the base and the head rests on a pale surface against a plain background.
