Description

Workers at the Mersinaki excavation stand among a spoil heap and deep-cut trench, many holding shovels. In the foreground a smiling man in a wide-brimmed hat stands beside a laughing woman holding a metal bucket, while women in headscarves smile nearby. Further figures work on the slope and a dark wheeled wagon stands in the middle distance against a dry hillside.

Description, scan 2
Several women in headscarves and long dresses work in a deep cutting in dry hillside soil, one with a shovel and another crouching in the pit. A man in a straw hat, waistcoat and sash stands at left, and a woman in the centre holds a metal bucket and laughs with her hand raised to her face. Further back, figures stand on the spoil and at the edge of the cutting, with a wooden frame and a tree on the slope.
