Limestone Cypro-Greek I Mersinaki I-II

Limestone head from Mersinaki with layered hair and a faint smile, photographed against a plain grey background — Photograph: Swedish Cyprus Expedition, 1927–31. Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, C06839. Public domain (CC0).

Description

A carved limestone head with a short neck, shown in three-quarter view on a dark base. The hair is rendered in layered, wavy locks over the forehead and a raised band across the top, and the large almond-shaped eyes and small closed smile are clearly modelled. Both ears are visible, the surface is slightly granular and worn, and the neck is cut flat at the bottom.
