Hellenistic roman Mersinaki Terracotta limestone

Carved stone head with short curled hair and a visible ear, turned to the right, from Mersinaki — Photograph: Swedish Cyprus Expedition, 1927–31. Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, C06447. Public domain (CC0).

Description

A carved head, probably a male figure, with short curled hair over the brow and around the ear, shown in three-quarter view turned to the right. The eyes have heavy lids, the nose and mouth are clearly modelled, and the surface is rough and pitted. The neck ends in a broken base, and the head stands on a metal rod fixed to a dark square plinth against a plain light background.
