Terracotta Cypro-Greek I Mersinaki I-II

Terracotta head of a bearded man wearing a rounded cap, from Mersinaki — Photograph: Swedish Cyprus Expedition, 1927–31. Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, C04926. Public domain (CC0).

Description

A head of a bearded man, photographed against a plain pale background and resting on a wooden block. A rounded cap with a raised band at its lower edge sits over the head, and a row of curled hair shows on the forehead beneath it. The heavy-lidded eyes, strong nose, moustache and full beard are modelled in relief, and the rough, pitted surface is broken away at the base of the neck, where white adhesive shows.
