Series·Kourion, Penn Museum expedition

Correspondence, 1933–1985

35 letters · 1933–85

Sites: Kourion, Kourion-Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates

This series holds the correspondence of the University Museum's Kourion expedition from December 1933 to 1985: 35 folders and 2,743 pages, filed by date. The finding aid describes much of it as letters and reports on money, administration and the progress of the excavations, and names as correspondents B. H. Hill, George H. McFadden, J. F. Daniel, Virginia Grace, H. H. F. Jayne, M. A. Godfrey and Froelich Rainey. The years 1934–1936 and 1947 have a folder for each half-year; a single folder covers 1941–1945, and there is one folder of undated letters.

Some folders are filed by subject: coins (1949–1951), McFadden's death in 1953 (two folders), J. S. Last (1954–1968), the terracotta objects from the Apollo sanctuary (1957), and Last's monograph on the ancient water supply (1974–1975), published as Kourion: The Ancient Water Supply in 1975. According to the finding aid, much of the correspondence of 1953–1955 concerns the settling of McFadden's affairs; G. Roger Edwards went to Cyprus in September 1953 for a year to represent the Museum in that settlement. The later folders run in groups of years to 1985.
