Painting: Tristram James Ellis, c.1878. PNT-00200. "Roman ruins at Soloi". Reproduced by permission of the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), Costas and Rita Severis Foundation. Resized.

Description

An olive tree with spreading branches fills the right side of the scene. Two figures, a man in a red cap and a woman in a dark dress, stand near its trunk with a small dog. Goats and sheep are scattered across the rocky foreground and the flat middle distance, and a rounded hill rises under a pale sky.

English

A shepherd and his wife stand beside an olive tree while their flock grazes over the plain where the ruins of Soloi lie, with the mountain of Vouni in the distance.
