William Culican
1928–1984 · Australia
Melbourne lecturer in Semitic studies and Phoenicia specialist whose 1982 review of Phoenician pottery is cited for its division of Black-on-Red ware into Local and Cypro-Phoenician.
Biography
William Culican is cited in the Cypriot literature for a 1982 review of Phoenician pottery and for his reading of a scene on a silver bowl in the Cesnola collection. He was born at Great Harwood, Lancashire, on 21 August 1928, was educated at Edinburgh and Oxford, and went to the University of Melbourne in 1960 as lecturer in Semitic studies, becoming reader in 1972; Iran and Phoenicia were his main fields3.
In the 1982 review (pages 55-70) he divided the mainland Black-on-Red ware into a "Local" group of the twelfth to ninth centuries and a "Cypro-Phoenician" group dating before 700, and stated that the origins of the Cypro-Phoenician group were uncertain2. Antoine Hermary discusses Culican's interpretation of the scene on the silver bowl no. 4555 from the collection of Luigi Palma di Cesnola1.
Culican died on 24 March 19843.
