Life and work

  1. c. 1880
Per Charles Henkel's testimony as reported in The Art Amateur, hired by Cesnola with Balliard as a 'newly employed restorer' at the Central Park museum; removed the dirt, plaster and earlier restoration materials from broken Cypriot statuary after its soaking in a tank, and then, with Balliard, re-restored the pieces (hammer, chisel, wire brush, wash). The report singles out Balliard for the new Hercules leg and other carving; Vallosio is not individually credited with any named piece.

  2. by 1883
A photograph of the repairing-room showing Henkel, Balliard and Vallosio at work was exhibited and identified by Henkel as a correct picture, 'much to the surprise of Di Cesnola and his attorneys'.

  3. October 1883 – January 1884
Other witnesses name Balliard but not Vallosio: Alley saw Balliard 'several months at work' at the Park museum; Cox saw Balliard in the repair room; Savage speaks of Balliard removing a finger. Vallosio appears only in Henkel's testimony and the photograph.
