Tuncer Bağışkan

fl. 1972–2020 · Cyprus

Archaeologist of the Turkish Cypriot antiquities department from 1975, author of its Lambousa project reports and of the 1995 Karpas Peninsula survey.

Biography

Tuncer Bağışkan signed the Turkish Cypriot antiquities department's reports on Lambousa and its 1995 survey of the Karpas Peninsula. He graduated from the University of Istanbul in 1972, left for London for lack of work, and returned in 1975 to join the new Turkish Cypriot department in Nicosia, then directed by Nurettin Yardımcı1.

His name stands on the Department's reports for the Lambousa Open-Air Museum Project, with F. Caner and Ö. Lefkonuklu for the 1992 season and with the same two and R. Öner for 19933,4. Summerer's table of the department's rescue excavations lists the work at Lapta/Lambousa in 1990-93 (a necropolis, a quarry and a fish tank), carried out with foreign volunteers, and cites Bağışkan's 2018 book Kıbrıs'ın Geçmişine Yolculuk for it1,6. The same table cites the book for the salvage excavation of looted graves at Krini; Summerer gives 1988 and 1992 for that work in her text and 1990-92 in the table1. In 1995 the Department surveyed the Karpas Peninsula under his name, and he published the result as Antik Karpasia Kentinde Arkeolojik Yüzey Araştırma ve Kent Kalıntıları Saptama Çalışmaları in 19961,5.

By the mid-1990s he was assistant to the Director, Ali Kanli. Müge Şevketoğlu thanked Kanli and Bağışkan, with the Ministry, for the permit for her survey of Neolithic and Chalcolithic sites in the Kyrenia district2. His dates of birth and death are not recorded.
