Life and work

  1. c. 1994
Described by Hofstadter as the new director of the Turkish Cypriot Antiquities Department, 'liberal-minded', who did not believe the ideological factor was primary in the destruction of the north's Byzantine monuments ('greed'); thanked by Hofstadter in the acknowledgements. A dealer (Ahmet) asked whether the department would object to his licence being restored replied sneeringly 'You have met Ali Kanli, the department's new director?'.
