Life and work

  1. 1876
    After the sale of the second (Curium) collection to the Museum, Hoe had second thoughts about the price paid and wrote to Cesnola; Cesnola, through Hiram Hitchcock, offered to annul the sale rather than know any Trustee discontented. Hoe later telegraphed Cesnola advising him to insure the Curium Collection.

    Named as a signatory (with Roosevelt, Johnston, Potter) of a telegram to Cesnola: 'Sum required nearly secured. Miss Wolfe giving $10,000'; an earlier telegram from 'R. Hoe (a trustee of the Metropolitan)' read 'Delay negotiations with London'.

    Named, in the account of Charles Henkel's testimony about the Central Park museum, among the Directors who witnessed restoration work by Balliard on Cesnola sculptures: 'Messrs. Prime, Hoe, Bryant, Johnstone, and Dodge, members of the Board of Directors'.

    Named in Cesnola's cross-examination as 'Mr. Hoe, Jr.', one of the trustees (with Prime, Johnston, Weston and Rhinelander) active alongside Russell Sturgis in the Fourteenth Street building arrangements, in the passage leading to Gehlen's repairs.
