Osman Aga

d. 1875 · Ottoman

Ottoman landowner.

Life and work

  1. 1875
As 'owner of the castle' at Palaeo-Paphos, watched Cesnola's diggers and questioned them about treasure; after Cesnola promised him all gold found, he let Cesnola sink shafts and borings under the castle, down to virgin soil at 52 feet. Threatened to stop the digging when nothing appeared; Cesnola had his foreman hand him two gold coins of Heraclius, planted for the purpose. Cesnola reports that Osman died some months later, convinced more gold could have been found.
