Life and work

    Bought 17 pieces of silver plate (first Lambousa treasure) from the finder, a peasant named Constanti Thoma, for 25 pounds, according to the finder's own statement to Glossop as relayed to Chamberlayne; Chamberlayne adds that some pieces were, 'it is alleged', melted down and others resold at greatly enhanced prices (the letter does not say who did either).

    Civil suitChamberlayne's letter of 28 Dec 1898 says the finder 'subsequently brought an action against the purchaser for having cheated him but failed to establish his plea'; the letter names the jeweller Nikolaki as the buyer of the 17 pieces
