    According to A. D. Savage's testimony as reported in The Art Amateur, Cesnola told him the museum authorities had employed a Mr. Ripley as their 'special and secret journalist' to prepare articles in defence of the museum, gave Savage permission to talk with Ripley, and Ripley's appointment, made on Cesnola's advice, was confirmed after considerable opposition by members of the Executive Committee.
