Life and work
- c. 1873Henkel testified that when the Cesnola collection arrived it was boxed with miscellaneous pieces, none marked or numbered; the first man to work on it was a Mr. North, who glued and plastered many pieces together; the fragments were brushed or washed with a sponge and clean water (in no case that Henkel knew of were statues given baths). Afterward Gehlen took charge of the restoration under Cesnola's directions, Henkel acting as helper.
