Life and work
- 1821During the 1821 disturbances an excerpt in Cobham credits 'M. Mechain, French Consul' with saving Larnaca from ruin: his remonstrances, backed by the cannon of a Royal Navy transport, made the Governor quarter the Syrian levies in the fortresses; he later sheltered Greek refugees at the Consulate against a mob until Greek boats from Psara arrived.

- 1825Consul Méchain had already described Cyprus in 1825 as 'a European power's admirable colony' (quoted in Bonato's introduction to Fourcade's 1844 memoir).
