    As mayor, promised Michael Toumazou any help the municipality could offer when Toumazou came to choose a site; the Athienou Archaeological Project began with the dig at Malloura. Nikos Mouyiaris, a New York-based native of Athienou, funded the first seasons.

    Named as the first of the successive mayors whose administrations supported the project (housing, laboratory space, vehicles, fuel).
