History

  1. 1989
Michael Toumazou visited Athienou to identify an excavation site; the mayor, Kostas Sakkalos, promised any help the municipality could offer. The arrangement was by verbal promise, not a written agreement, and Nikos Mouyiaris, a New York-based native of Athienou, funded the initial seasons.

  2. 1990–2009
Under mayors Sakkalos (from 1990), Panayiotis Koumis, Gavriel Kazazis and Spyros Papouis the municipality supplied the Athienou Archaeological Project with a four-wheel-drive truck and co-purchased minibus, fuel and driver insurance, one to four buildings a year as housing, a laboratory building, utility bills, an end-of-season banquet and logistical help. (The end year is the book's date of writing, not stated as an end of support.)
