Life and work

  1. 1961
    Department of Antiquities began restoring the Salamis theatre 'from 1961' under the direction of the architect-archaeologist John Travlos, adapting it for performances of ancient drama (French-language chapter in Salamis of Cyprus).

  2. 1961–1963
    At Kourion the Department, with the assistance of John Travlos, began restoring the theatre cavea in 1961; by 1963 it was complete up to the diazoma.

    BCH Chronique: the Greek architect-archaeologist J. Travlos is consulted for all restoration work on the island's ancient theatres; at Salamis two rows of seats added and substructures of the auditorium rebuilt that year.

    Jean Travlos, at the American School at Athens, visited Paphos at the invitation of the Cypriot government to study the Odeon's state and give observations on the restoration; first phase already done by the Department's restoration service.

    Parodoi and part of the stage of the Paphos Odeon rebuilt with Travlos; the orchestra had earlier been restored on his advice; restoration supervised by M. J. Travlos. Six rows of seats, orchestra, part of the parodoi and stage-building restored; Nicolaou records several advisory visits.
