Irene Pamer

fl. 2023 · Austria

Wrote the archaeometric essay and, with Alexander Gatzsche, took the photographs for the 2023 catalogue of the Alexander Malios collection of Cypriot antiquities.

Biography

Irene Pamer's name is attached to the scientific testing of the Alexander Malios collection. She wrote the "Archaeometric Contribution" to Alexander Malios Collection, Volume 1: Cypriot Antiquities (Leipzig: AMRICHA, 2023), edited by Elena Poyiadji-Richter, and the catalogue credits its photographs to her and Alexander Gatzsche1. The photographs carry the AMRICHA credit; the collection is that of Alexander Malios1.

Her essay sorts the work on selected objects into three kinds: analysis of materials, documentation of manufacture and surface, and study of condition, reworking and authenticity1. Tiny samples from an earring (cat. 319) showed a filler of lime or limestone, and UV luminescence suggested an organic binder. Multispectral imaging of a horse-and-rider figurine (cat. 189) showed two turquoise pigments, and a historical photograph taken before restoration shows breaks and a missing mouth and harness, so the essay says the stylistic authenticity of those parts can be questioned1.

A copper oxhide ingot (cat. 113) was sampled by drilling 0.18 g from its core. The sample was prepared at the German Mining Museum in Bochum, measured at Goethe University Frankfurt and evaluated in Leipzig against the Oxford lead isotope database, and it relates to the Apliki cluster1. Reflectance transformation imaging was used on a bowl (cat. 226) and on silver plaques (cat. 229-230). Structured-light 3D imaging showed that two lamps came from one mould and traced the mould pairs behind a group of figures (cat. 211), and X-rays covered four objects. Thermoluminescence dated cat. 161 to about 2700 years, give or take 20, and cat. 175 to between 1800 and 2900 years; both were judged ancient1. She states that decisions on the objects were taken as a team, under current conservation ethics1. No other publication by her is recorded.

Life and work

  1. 2023
Author of the 'Archaeometric Contribution: A closer look into material and techniques of selected artefacts' in Alexander Malios Collection, Volume 1: Cypriot Antiquities (Leipzig: AMRICHA, 2023), one of two essays in the volume.

  2. 2023
Microchemical and UV examination of earring cat. 319 (limestone filler, probable organic binder) and multispectral imaging of the horse-and-rider figurine cat. 189: two turquoise pigments, one ancient and one modern retouching; a historical photo shows breakage and missing mouth and harness before restoration, so those parts are very likely later additions.

  3. 2023
Lead isotope analysis of copper oxhide ingot cat. 113: 0.18 g core sample drilled out, prepared at the German Mining Museum in Bochum, measured at Goethe University Frankfurt, evaluated in Leipzig against the Oxford Archaeological Lead Isotope Database; matches the Apliki cluster.

  4. 2023
RTI photography of the inscription on bronze bowl cat. 226 and silver plaques cat. 229-230; structured-light 3D scanning used to show two oil lamps came from the same mould and that a four-figure ring group (cat. 211) was assembled from two mould pairs; X-rays of four artefacts (e.g. lentoid flask cat. 93); two thermoluminescence tests (cat. 161 and 175) confirming both ceramics ancient.
