Life and work
- 1855Published Proklamation des Amasis, a memoir under the auspices of the Duc de Luynes (who had published a facsimile of the Idalion bronze tablet) giving phonetic values for all the Cypriote signs, starting from an identification of the words Salamis and Amathus, and a supposed translation of the whole 'Tablet of Idalium' as a decree of the Egyptian king Amasis (571-527 BC) to the inhabitants of Cyprus. Cesnola calls the language assumed Semitic; both authors treat it as a failed attempt at decipherment.
