Denis Zhuravlev
fl. 2004–2005 · Russia
Curator at the State Historical Museum in Moscow who catalogued the metalwork, glass and lamps of its Cypriote collection, formed almost entirely by Count Alexei Uvarov.
Biography
D. Zhuravlev catalogued the metal objects, glass and lamps of the Cypriote antiquities in the State Historical Museum, Moscow, for the 2005 catalogue Ancient Cypriote Art in Russian Museums. The volume lists him as Senior Curator and researcher in the museum's Department of Archaeology1. The Russian bibliography prints his name as D.B. Zhuravlev1.
With Natalia Isaenko he wrote the chapter on the history of the museum's Cypriote collection1. It reports about 200 objects, almost all from the former collection of Count Alexei Uvarov. Uvarov presented them to the Moscow Archaeological Society on 27 April 1877 and said he had bought them in the 1870s from the Russian consul Yusefovich. The museum's own documentation for four Base Ring figurines says "from Cesnola". After Uvarov died in 1884 his widow, Praskovja Uvarova, showed no interest in the Cypriote pieces. The collection was nationalised in the 1920s and divided between the State Historical Museum and the Pushkin Museum1. The catalogue describes 89 of the 200 objects. Vassos Karageorghis wrote the entries for pottery, terracotta and stone, Zhuravlev and Isaenko the metal entries, and Zhuravlev alone the glass and the lamps1.
The catalogue also cites Zhuravlev as editor of the Russian catalogue of the exhibition The Birth of the Olympic Games, held at the State Historical Museum from 2 July to 18 October 2004, which included some of the Uvarov pieces. It names him as co-author with T. Il'ina of a study of the museum's more than 80 Cypriote terracotta figurines, forthcoming in 2005 in a volume in memory of N.P. Sorokina1. Nothing is known of his career outside these publications.
