History

  1. 1874
Yorkshire College of Science created; a museum was planned but never established, so staff and students used the museum of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. Became the University of Leeds by royal charter in 1904.

  3. 1894–1895
The BM Trustees offer the Yorkshire College material from the Amathus excavations; Nathan Bodington, Principal, accepts. Reeve identifies it, on object types and unknown provenance, with the University's Cypriot collection found in storage in 1913. Ulbrich and Kiely say this material is no longer identifiable.

  4. July 1902
On Bodington's application, A. S. Murray tells the BM Trustees that the Principal of the Yorkshire College asks for duplicates on behalf of the Society's museum, used by College students; Enkomi, Klavdia-Tremithos and Paphos material goes to the Society, where its curator Henry Crowther uses it for typological display and school lectures, not the College.

  5. 1904
University of Leeds chartered; Nathan Bodington first Vice-Chancellor (1904-1911).

  6. October 1913
Eliza Bodington gives the Classical Department a group of Cypriot antiquities found among Nathan Bodington's stored possessions in the University cellar, 'in the hope that it might encourage a taste for archaeology'. A second selection from his Cypriot collection goes to the Society's museum (94th Annual Report). A. M. Woodward, Lecturer in Classics, catalogues the University group.

  7. 1914
Woodward publishes on the Lanuvium antiquities at Leeds but not on the Cypriot collections; Reeve finds no sign the Cypriot material was used for University research.
