The Cypriot collection
Most foreign holdings, including several Cypriot items, were sold to Liverpool in 1956. (2012)
History
- 1920Sir Henry Rider Haggard gave Classical antiquities to the museum; per its donation records the only ones still held are two ancient Greek vases and a Roman glass bowl (accession numbers indicate 1920). Haggard had visited Cyprus in 1887 and 1900 and was given Cypriot pottery by Samuel Brown.
- 1956The museum sold most of its foreign holdings, with various Cypriot items and many Egyptian objects including Haggard material acquired from his widow in the 1920s, to Liverpool Museums, then rebuilding displays after war loss. Kiely and Merrillees count 14 Cypriot vases in the Liverpool purchase, one (a White Painted III amphora) recorded as Haggard's.
