    Founded as the American Institute of Nautical Archaeology with its headquarters at Kyrenia, Cyprus; Bass and Katzev were first president and vice-president (Bass, personal communication 2003, in Leonard). Katzev's obituary says Katzev became a founder in 1973 and that INA's first project was completing the Kyrenia hull reconstruction in the castle. The Springer entry dates the founding to 1972.

    INA's first surveys along the southern Turkish coast (Bozburun, Serçe Limanı) were run from the Cyprus headquarters.

    Kyrenia II full-scale replica built, a collaboration between INA and the Hellenic Institute for the Preservation of Nautical Tradition; launched 1985 and sailed Piraeus to Paphos in 1986.
