The project
In 1961 Vassos Karageorghis and K. Nicolaou visited the temple of Aphrodite Akraia at Cape Dinareum several times1. The foundations described by Hogarth were still visible, and the surface sherds were Roman1. On the plateau and the southern slope they collected stone tools and fragments of stone vessels, among them a large flint knife, a stone axe and fragments of andesite bowls, where no pottery had been found; Karageorghis suggested an aceramic, early Neolithic settlement, perhaps of the sixth millennium BCE1. South and south-west of the plateau he described ruins tentatively attributed to the ancient city of Acra, where farmers seeking building stones had exposed foundations and a circular structure 10 metres in diameter, which he thought probably a basin or water reservoir1. He hoped to excavate the site in the very near future1.
