The project
In 1885 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter opened four tombs at Psematismenos: two for himself and two for Dr. Dümmler1,2. The catalogue of the Cyprus Museum describes the settlement and necropolis, on a hill between Psemmatisméno and Marôni, as Early Bronze Age1. Merrillees notes that the precise location of the openings cannot be established, and that circumstantial evidence favours the east side of Trelloukkas hill2.
Merrillees identifies one burial deposit as excavated on 20 May 18852. From the illustrated pottery he considers that deposit possibly Middle Cypriote I, on the evidence of a jug2. The four tombs were never numbered2.
Ohnefalsch-Richter also retrieved a stone corn rubber from the Bronze Age settlement in 1885, entered in the Cyprus Museum catalogue as No. 4712. Merrillees further describes an alleged tomb group that Ohnefalsch-Richter bought from a "peasant" in Psematismenos, and notes that a seal said to come from the village is out of context and cannot have formed part of the original tomb group2. The contents of the tombs were once displayed together in the Cyprus Museum and were found dispersed in 1894; Merrillees writes that they cannot now be traced1,2.
