Sia-Mathiatis-Agia Varvara survey (Almyras team, Zurich)
1995–1996 · Mathiatis
Also known as Swiss survey
The Sia-Mathiatis-Agia Varvara survey of 1995 and 1996 investigated copper-working sites; two furnaces stood at the edge of the Sia-Mathiatis mine, and charcoal from a furnace at Mathiatis-Sud gave a date of about 400 BC.

The project
In 1995 and 1996 members of the Sia-Mathiatis-Agia Varvara Survey, directed by Walter Fasnacht, investigated copper-working sites in the region around Mathiatis. Two well-preserved furnaces were identified at the edge of the Sia-Mathiatis mine1. Fasnacht reports that systematic prospecting found a second site with furnaces in situ at the edge of the modern Mathiatis-Sud mine, and a radiocarbon date of about 400 BC from charcoal collected in one furnace. He adds that the furnaces were protected against erosion and that study and publication were planned after the Almyras project was completed2.
