The project
In 1883 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter opened three more tombs for the Cyprus Museum in the rock-cut necropolis at Ayios Ioannis tis Malountas1. The Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum (1899) calls the necropolis Early Hellenistic and says peasants discovered and ravaged it in 18831. Some of the earliest graves held Graeco-Phoenician pottery with concentric-circle decoration, and the jewellery included gold frontlets (C. M. 4319–21) and animal-head earrings (C. M. 4015–33)1. The catalogue adds that some of the rock tombs were made permanently accessible, and that the Cyprus Museum's Mallunta specimens had lost their original labels and could not be distinguished from similar objects from Soli and other sites1.
