The project
In 1990 a team from the University of Patras and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with Apostolos Sarris as director, made a geophysical survey at Athienou-Malloura1. They measured soil resistance and magnetic-field intensity in four 20 x 20 m blocks near the sanctuary1. Sarris calls the survey exploratory and reports that geological and soil conditions limited its success; a geological trend rising toward the east masked most magnetic anomalies, and most resistance anomalies were attributed to shallow bedrock or disturbed ground1. A few anomalies, suggested by both methods, were interpreted as possibly belonging to walls1. Sarris reports the work in a 2011 chapter on geophysical prospection at Malloura1.
