The project
In 1885 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter excavated a temenos beside a spring at Lythrodontas, in a valley about two miles southwest of the village, near the ruined church of Ag. Georgios1. Peasants had discovered it. The Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum of 1899, by Myres and Ohnefalsch-Richter, calls it a very primitive temenos, simply a layer of ashes containing late Ptolemaic and early imperial coins and lamps1. Buchholz's 1989 study of Ohnefalsch-Richter as an archaeologist in Cyprus describes the find as a spring sanctuary with coins and lamps2.
