The project
Fragments of four Late Minoan III vessels came from the surface at Moulos, Akanthou, in spring 1959, when H. W. Catling explored the site1. A small, badly eroded area on the west side of Akanthou-Moulos yielded Late Bronze Age material1. The finds were five body fragments, probably from a large amphoroid crater or pithoid jar, and fragments of three large stirrup jars1. Catling and Karageorghis identify the crater or pithoid jar as Minoan from its fabric, ornament and decorated area1. They argue that the finds show a relatively substantial amount of Late Minoan material at a north-coast site, and suggest that Minoan ships may have traded along that coast, while noting that the vessels could have reached Moulos from Enkomi through the Lefkoniko Pass1. The fragments are recorded in the Archaeological Survey of Cyprus Collections as CS 9901.
