Bichrome Red Woman Jug
Description: | Pottery jug in Bichrome Red ware with a woman-and-pitcher jug spout; wheelmade; ovoid body on a raised cylindrical base with splaying foot; tall conical neck with an everted rim (partly missing); double-ribbed handle from shoulder to neck with discs of clay at the juncture with the neck, probably representing metal rivets; opposite the handle on the shoulder is a figurine of a woman holding, in her right hand, a large pitcher with a conical body and trefoil-mouth; the figure is handmade with moulded face and upper body: she is wearing a long robe and a cloak which extends over her head (possibly over a conical cap or elaborate coiffure); long tresses fall on each side of her chest; the vase is made of buff-pink clay with a dark red slip decorated with black and white paint: black and white parallel bands on the body and neck, black concentric circles with white dots on the shoulder, a register of pendant triangles below the rim; the figurine itself is painted in dark red or black with various details in black and white.
