Bichrome Ware Jug

Pottery jug in Bichrome ware; wheel-made; ovoid body on a very low disc/ring base; trefoil mouth but no neck; single strap handle from shoulder to rim. Made of buff-orange clay, surface fired cream, and decorated with brown and red paint: very large complex vegetal motif below the spout, consisting of a palm (?) tree-like shaft topped by a large floral or leaf spray, from which extend branches tipped with large and smaller buds; eyes and a pairs of swastikas on each side of the spout; bands at the junction of body and spout, and on the rim; ladder pattern and a central St Andrew's cross on the handle. Ghost-marks of other pot in the kilm are visible on the surface: one with scale decoration is visible on the body below the handle, while one or more can be seen on the vegetal motif below the spout.
