Now the pit is excavated and can be more closely determined as to its character. The earth layers under the statue floor are horizontal though very homogeneous. In these layers the pit is down-dug irregular but broadly forming a square with rounded corners. When the pit was dug down, remains of older buildings were found, partly that which has been described as an altar, partly the wall of Ajia Paraskevi stone. What the pit originally was is difficult to determine, perhaps a votive pit in front of the statue-floor altar, perhaps a robbers' pit after treasure seekers. So much is however certain that it was dug and lay open before the earth fill collapsed in over the statue floor.
It is decided that the wall remains under the statue floor are to be examined more closely.
