… the clearing is begun. Almost every bone in the skeleton is crushed, and the preparation of it is demanding. The body lies in dorsal position with the head to the south. The lower legs are slightly crossed and the hands lie on the back. (Has he been bound?) The whole body lies in a chavarous fill, but it is tightly packed and contains some small stones. There is no real bedding.
On closer study the skeleton is found not to lie on its back but on its stomach, which is shown partly by the shoulder blades covering the ribs, partly by the position of the neck vertebrae with the processes upward. The greater part of the spinal column is destroyed. The skeleton is drawn and photographed and lifted. The skull is destroyed but its position shows that the body lay with the mouth downward. At the level of the knees of body no. 1 lies the skull of another body, which evidently was laid in its position in a mutilated state. The skull is thus surrounded on all sides by various bones from the upper and lower extremities. It is drawn and … continues
