Description

Men work at the edge of an excavated section at Ayia Irini, with a spade stuck upright at left and buckets and broken pieces lying on the ground behind. A man in a hat sits on a chair with a notebook on his knee while others kneel over a heap of finds, one holding a small piece. Broken stone sculptures and a large white bowl lie at right beside the dug earth wall.

Description, scan 2
A seated man in a hat rests a board on his knee and writes or draws, while workers in caps and shirts kneel around him in the trench. Broken stone sculpture fragments, including a head, lie among them with a white vessel and small boxes. Behind, a dark earth face, buckets, a shovel and spoil heaps show the open excavation.
