Yuri Savelyev
fl. 1960–2005 · Russia
Pushkin Museum researcher who wrote a catalogue of its almost 400 Cypriot objects in the 1960s, still unpublished in 2005, and in 1966 published an article on its sculpture.
Biography
Yuri Savelyev, a senior researcher in the Department of Art and Archaeology of the Ancient World at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, wrote a complete catalogue of the museum's Cypriot collection. O. Tugusheva's history of the collection places it in the 1960s, covering almost 400 exhibits, with a long preface that gave, in her words, "for the first time in Russian historiography" a general outline of ancient Cypriot art. It "has still not been published"1. Earlier Moscow publications on the collection were by Maria M. Kobyilina in 1927 and Nikolay Shcherbakov in 19301.
In 1966 he published an article on the sculpture of ancient Cyprus in the museum's collection2. The 2005 catalogue cites it for three heads: a beardless male head in the Idalion style that came from the Vladimir Golenishchev collection in 1911, a head of a youth from the same collection, and a second head of a youth, formerly in the Ostroukhov collection and bought in Paris in 19291.
Savelyev is one of four authors listed for the Pushkin section of Vassos Karageorghis's Ancient Cypriote Art in Russian Museums (2005), and the book states that Karageorghis wrote its entries for pottery, terracottas and stone sculpture1.
