Life and work
- 1865Cesnola visited Washington in June to see Seward, the Secretary of State, about the consulship; two New York senators urged Seward to appoint him consul in Cyprus
- 1860sAs Secretary of State communicated Cesnola's offer of two boxes of antiquities to the Smithsonian Institution, which accepted. Cesnola's letter says the boxes were never claimed and he gave them to the American Missionary College at Beirut; Marangou separately says boxes destined for the Smithsonian were lost when the Guerrière sank in September 1871
- 19 April 1866Cesnola sent a report to H. Seward at the State Department (one of many consular reports; a 15-page report on the Genab Effendi affair was also sent to him)
- July 1871As ex-Secretary of State visited Cesnola in Cyprus and enthusiastically admired his collection of antiquities
