  1. 1847
    A shaft in a rough underground passage at Bamboula carried the date 1847, 'a name believed to be Van Lennep' and the letters N.W.F. in Roman characters, so Lt H. M. Sinclair concluded the passage 'had been explored before' his own 1879 work. Heads and some better pottery were still found in the passage in 1879.
