S. W. Crawford

fl. 1870–1876 · United States

Officer, United States Army, active 1870–1876. Worked with Isaac Holister Hall.

Life and work

  1. 1870–1871
In an undated Cesnola letter printed by Marangou (probably to Hiram Hitchcock, urging that the Met's trustees be told of the danger of the collection being sold to Europe), Cesnola writes that 'General Crawford wants very much to write such articles' for the press and that his correspondent could combine with him. The collection was then offered to the Louvre, British Museum and Berlin Museum.

  2. 1876
Cesnola's second and last visit to Neo-Paphos was made in the company of 'two Americans', Prof. Isaac H. Hall and General S. W. Crawford, 'a gallant officer of our regular army'. A later episode in the northern excursion has Crawford choosing an encampment grove that belonged to a Turk and awaiting Cesnola with two policemen after a dispute with Cesnola's men.
