Rada y Delgado

fl. 1870–1882 · Spain

Spanish traveller and expedition member, active 1870–1882.

Life and work

  1. 1870
Visited Cyprus with the Spanish Scientific Mission (frigate Arapiles); the party was received by Cesnola, who came on board personally, and toured his museum at the American consulate in Larnaca. Cesnola described his finds at Dali and Athienou and his discovery of the temple of Aphrodite; the Spaniards were introduced to the consuls, with special mention of Demetrios Pierides's collection and numismatics.

  2. 1870
Was in Cyprus at the same time as Johannes Doell, who was cataloguing the Cesnola Collection for the Imperial Museums, St Petersburg; Marangou says the St Petersburg purchase did not materialise, and that Delgado's book refers to Doell's catalogue (pp. 706-7) and to the 1870 Paris auction catalogue (pp. 708-17).

  3. 1870
Reports that Cesnola offered the Spanish party the sale of his collection, stating a preference for Spain; the mission lacked the funds (translated quotation in Marangou: 'Had we sufficient amounts of money ... the Cesnola Collection would today embellish the rooms of the Archaeological Museum of Spain').

  4. 1882
Published the account in 'Viaje a Oriente de la fragata de Guerra Arapiles' (3 vols, Barcelona); Cyprus is chapter VI.
