Director of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens who let Vassos Karageorghis study its Cypriot collection in 2002 and wrote the history of that collection for the 2003 catalogue.
Biography
In July 2002 Nikolaos Kaltsas, then Director of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, gave Vassos Karageorghis permission to study and publish the museum's Cypriot collection, together with Lazaros Kolonas, the Director-General of Antiquities. Karageorghis worked on it for five days that month, shortly before the museum closed for refurbishment ahead of the 2004 Olympics1.
Kaltsas also wrote the introductory history of the collection for Karageorghis's catalogue of about 850 objects, published by the A.G. Leventis Foundation in 20031,2. His essay records the first vase, bought from the collector E. Angelopoulos on 17 February 1879, and 67 vases received from the Archaeological Society of Athens in 1880. It also lists the collection of Zacharias Bakoulis from 1895-96, a 1928 exchange of 41 vases under the director P. Kastriotis, gifts in 1940 and 1960, the Empedoklis collection of 1950, three of the Blegen vases in 1984, and 28 pieces handed over by the police as illicit possessions2.
Schorsch and Hendrix thanked Kaltsas, as Director, for access to the museum's Late Bronze Age tripods and Mycenaean metalwork for their study of Cypriot bronzes4. In March 2009 he was pictured with A. P. Leventis, the Presidents of Greece and Cyprus and the Greek Minister of Culture at the opening of the Foundation's new Cypriot Antiquities Hall in the museum3. His dates of birth and of office are not recorded.
