Mustapha (of Galinoporni)
fl. 1870–1929 · Ottoman
Ottoman finder and landowner, active 1870–1929. Lived at Galinoporni.
Life and work
- 1880–1888Hogarth was told that 'some years ago' a Mustapha found a pit in his garden at Galinoporni yielding stone heads (built into his gate) and statuary fragments (in his garden); the man said A. di Cesnola had offered him 3 pounds for the digging right, which he refused, filling the pit in because its foul air put out lights. Hogarth: 'Stripped of exaggerations, the story is only that of the opening of a tomb.'

- c. 1929Gjerstad calls 'Mustapha at Gallinoproni' the 'arch-pirate' of the poor Turkish Karpassos villagers who were, he says, 'archaeological pirates' by near necessity; describes him as short, quick, 'a thief and a rogue' with a black moustache. Gjerstad is writing of the Swedish party's Karpassos work after Lapithos.
