Life and work

  1. c. 1866

  2. c. 1866
Seized by the Turkish police from an American storehouse and imprisoned as a deserter from the Turkish army. Cesnola went to Constantinople, the American Minister Edward Joy Morris backed him, a mixed commission under Augustus J. Johnson decided for Cesnola, and the Porte conceded the Caimakam's dismissal, Mustafa's restitution and recognition as American Consular Guard, a 21-gun salute and 10,000 piastres damages to the American dragoman.

  3. 1872
As 'my cavass Mustafa' organised Cesnola's spring 1872 expedition along the south-east coast; Cesnola credits eight years' service (butler, valet, dragoman and consular guard; learned to read and write modern Greek, keep accounts and speak Italian). The identification with Fefsi is inferred from the continuity of the title and the eight-year span.

  4. c. 1872
Sent by Cesnola ('my cavass Mustafa') to the Caimakam of Limassol for two policemen, and with them arrested a man who had set fire to a hill and run off with Cesnola's saddlebags; Mustafa then feared revenge from the man's brothers. Identification with Fefsi inferred.
