Life and work
- 1983Headed the faculty committee appointed to study the University of Virginia's acquisition of 20 Cypriot pots (a gift from the Turkish Cypriot authorities to the Bayly Museum) after Karageorghis asked for their return to the Republic of Cyprus. Herscher says Bell consulted dozens of specialists and that the committee recommended return, endorsed at every academic level up to the President. The President rejected this in a letter of 7 March 1983: 18 pieces would be returned to the donors; the two pots from Toumba tou Skourou went to the Cypriot Embassy in Washington.
